Cooking with class: Harvest Kitchen in Shelton teaches secret to eating well

SHELTON — The Harvest Kitchen is open. But don’t expect to be served.

The idea behind the cooking studio and farm education center at Jones Family Farms is to teach people how to prepare nutritious meals using locally grown ingredients.

Berry enthusiasts have had a rare treat this spring and early summer: ripe, ready-to-pick strawberries in late May, and blueberries in late June, more than two weeks ahead of schedule, according to area farmers.

And corn is next.

Families heading to Jones Family Farm in Shelton last week for a pick-your-own experience were fortunate to see the last of the strawberry crop and the first of the blueberries. There were also pick-your-own blueberries last week at Bishop’s Orchards in Guilford.

Traditionally, Connecticut farmers are ramping up their strawberry season preparation the beginning of June to open a week or two into the month. This year, Mother Nature has helped to break tradition. Due to the very warm weather Connecticut has experienced this spring, the strawberries are already ripe for the picking. To many, the sweet treats symbolize the unofficial start of summer.

Shelton, Connecticut (WTNH) - Warm and sunny spring days have been extra sweet for Connecticut strawberry crops.

Some in the business say their fruit has ripened early and there is plenty for the pickin'.

During this time of year, local strawberry fields are usually filled with white flowers, but at Jones Family Farms in Shelton, this year they're filled with berries.

SHELTON — Resident Jamie Jones was recognized as one of the top young farmers by the American Farm Bureau Association at its recent conference in Seattle.

Jones, a sixth-generation farmer at Jones Family Farms, located on 400 acres in the White Hills section, earned runner-up status among nearly 50 of the nation’s most accomplished young farmers and ranchers.

There was a first-place winner and four runners-up for the association’s prestigious Agricultural Achievement Award.

After winning the great Facebook Farm Fight last week, Jones Family Farms secured bragging rights and a day of work out of a crew from friendly rival Bishop’s Orchards in Guilford.

Like many agricultural parcels, the Jones Family Farms offers a small bevy of various crops for harvest. Through the summer and into the fall, people can pick strawberries, then blueberries and then pumpkins.

But when December sneaks in, that's when the real cash crop is harvested. Indeed, while the entire plot reaches a massive 400 acres, exactly half is dedicated to Christmas trees.
