The Perfect Fruit

The Perfect Fruit

Over fifty years ago, Terry Jones returned from a trip across the country to bring a new crop to his father’s Christmas Tree Farm. Terry planted strawberry vines and ever since, Jones Family Farms has invited guests to come and harvest their own strawberries. Terry Jones refers to the strawberry as the ‘perfect fruit’ and every June the fields at Pumpkinseed Hill and the Valley Farm are speckled with the brilliant red berries. Strawberries are the first fruits of the summer and the season lasts only three to four short weeks. Strawberries are very nutritious, easy to freeze, and great for pies, shortcake, jams or fresh eating.

Strawberry Harvesting Tips

Before you head out to the farm, we like to remind our visitors that harvesting strawberries can be a physically demanding activity.  We want you to be prepared for the heat, sun, and terrain so you have a wonderful visit.

Caring for Your Strawberries

Strawberries are very fragile and they do not stand up well to being left in direct sun or in extreme heat. After picking, keep your berries in a cool place.

Strawberry Recipes

Strawberries make delicious treats from jams, to salsa to frozen pops. They are very nutritious, easy to freeze, and great for pies, shortcakes, jams, and fresh eating.

As we reflect on our agricultural adventures and experiences, I find it exciting to realize that our many environmental practices work in symbiosis with the positive ecological impacts and the economic success of our farm.

I believe this is a critical message for our nation to embrace.
